UCB data set from 2010-2011 school year:

http://opa.berkeley.edu/statistics/cds/2010-2011.pdf

2001 tuition: $0 tuition + $4,123 fees = $4,123

2011 tuition: $9,402 tuition + $1,538 fees = $10,940

the only way i know how to check inflation rates is through the CPI Inflation calculator (on the US Dept of Labor’s website):

http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl?cost1=3000&year1=2001&year2=2011

after entering $4,123 under 2001, I found that it equals $5,282.12 in 2011 dollars.

So, adjusted for inflation, over the last ten years tuition has increased 48.282%.

The Regents have proposed up to an 81% fee hike if the State does not match costs:

http://www.mercedsunstar.com/2011/09/15/2044662/uc-students-could-see-more-tuition.html

The max fee hike, extended over 4 years, would bring tuition to about $22,000.

I can’t figure out what that is adjusted for inflation because the CPI for the future hasn’t been set yet (although I only took Econ 1 so if anyone actually does know how to figure that out, please do and let me know) but based on past inflation rates and taking into account that the increases will happen over the course of a mere 4 years, I’d say that’s something worth protesting against.

Personally, I’d like my 16-year-old sister to be able to receive the same education that I have received and not come out of it even more mired in debt that I am, but …
